PICU Admission Checklist:

☐ Clothing: Pack comfortable clothing for your child, including pajamas. You may also want to pack a few changes of clothes in case your child gets sick or soiled their clothes.

☐ Toys: Pack a few of your child's favourite toys to help them feel comfortable and relaxed in the PICU.

☐ Comfort items: Pack a few comfort items for your child, such as a blanket, pillow, or stuffed animal.

☐ Personal items: Pack any personal items that your child will need, such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, and comb. Don't forget personal items and medications for yourself!

☐ Chargers: Pack chargers for your phone, laptop, and any other electronic devices that you will need.

☐ Food: The PICU may not have a cafeteria, so you may want to pack some snacks and drinks for yourself. You may be able to find a hospital cafeteria or shop where you can buy larger food items and drinks.

☐ Money: You may need to pay for parking, meals, or other expenses while your child is in the PICU.

☐ Information: Bring a copy of your child's medical records, as well as any other important information about their health.

☐ Support: Bring someone with you to the hospital to provide support and help you make decisions.

In addition to packing these items, it is also important to remember the following:

  • Make arrangements for childcare for other children in your family. If you have other children, you will need to make arrangements for someone to care for them while you are at the hospital.

  • Find a place to stay. If you live far from the hospital, you may need to find a place to stay while your child is in the PICU. The hospital may have a Ronald McDonald House or other facility that can provide you with a place to stay.

  • Be prepared for a long stay. Children in the PICU can stay for days or weeks. Be prepared to stay with your child for the duration of their stay.

  • Ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask the doctors, nurses and allied health staff any questions you have about your child's care.

  • Take care of yourself. It is important to take care of yourself during this difficult time. Make sure to eat, sleep, and get some exercise.
